Let's hope Matt cuts the mustard, and sticks around for a while, as they are running out of regenerations! While young and sexy doctors are fun to watch, it would be nice to see a return to crotchety, old doctors who look like they have biffed about the universe for centuries.

Well, it looks like the new Doctor is not Patterson Joeseph after all but Matt Smith, the seventeen-year-old lead singer of emo band Elusive Helicopters;

Happy New Year everyone - as you've noticed there's not been anything new on the site due to my other work commitments, but soon we'll kick off again.

Must admit I only got halfway through the Doctor Who christmas special, I was just bored by it. I was reminded of David's comment a few weeks back about how all English television now has a moment halfway through where you're supposed to cry - it's such a formula, and this was nothing if not formulaic. I think it's a shame that the villains get such short shrift in Nu-Who - they always feel tacked-on, and you never get any explanation of what they're doing or why.

I don't think there was any post-modern intent in the Dr Who Xmas special, or intentional mysogyny come to that. I think that (as is too often the case in New Who and particularly in the Xmas specials) there was a lot of under-developed ideas and half-arsed plotting.

It's a shame because a Cybermen-in-Victorian-London story could have been really good, especially with the giant robot ending, and the Imposter-Doctor story might have made an interesting mid-season episode but instead we had both mashed into an unsatisfying lump.

Saw the latest Dr Who Xmas special. Not sure whether I'm happy because it was so steampunk or pissed off because it was so misogynistic. I tried to step around the misogyny on pomo grounds, but it just didn't work. Bit depressed. Would be curious to see what others think.

Merry Christmas, John, Evil Dr. Chris and all who beaver away at the institute. I'm completely stuffed from all the usual trimmings, and very much looking forward to watching part of my Christmas haul this year - the cheerful yuletide tale: Basket Case ("The tenant in Room 7 is very small, very twisted, and very mad....")
