Whoops! Sorry Andrew, you're totally correct - have fixed that. In the industry we use the term "misbolderisation".

I think the key is to imagine Kermit The Frog playing the lead in The Tin Drum and then imagine David Bennet playing the lead in The Muppet Movie. Only then it possibly to realise how brilliant both those movies had the potential to be...

just the grammatical nazi in me, but i love the way you've mis-bolded (if that's a word) 'fire and rod stewart' like it's an act "hey, i'm going to see earth wind, and after them fire and rod stewart". or is that rod stewart on fire? i'll bring the marshmallows....

Isn't it great to see the love for Children Of The Revolution, a film I don't think you'll ever hear mentioned in articles about Aussie cinema?

Glenn: I think Mad Max 2 is probably better than Mad Max, but I can't really split them up, I like to think of the three of them as a triptych, and I like the fact that each is a different kind of film (the third being the "Hollywood" version, but not necessarily worse for that fact).

Janet: Yes, there's a mini-Karvan in High Tide, and she's very good.

David: Creepy Sam Neil and his crazy religion. That pic actually looks like it should be on the cover of an enormous paperback with gold embossed lettering. Also, I've just spent way too much time pondering over which IS better, "The Tin Drum" or "The Muppet Movie". Obviously the real answer is that they're incomparable, but it's one of those immovable object/irresistable force things - they're both great films, but in completely different fields. Does The Tim Drum win because it's art? Or can the argument be made that The Muppet Movie has affected more people and therefore trumps it?

Sam: Thank you for your comment re Canvas magazine. If you're in Melbourne you should pick up a copy while you can, but you can also have a look at the article in question here: http://canvas.e-p.net.au/home/retreat/243-lost-queer-icons

I think "My Brilliant Career" is most definitely better than "Mad Max" - a movie that I don't think is good at all, the sequels on the other hand are an altogether different kettle of fish. However, neither of them are as good as "Children of the Revolution".

Children of the Revolution is one of my all time favourite films. It was one of the earliest films I saw Richard Roxburgh and Geoffrey Rush in. I'd almost managed to block out the first film I saw RR in. It was that god-awful Billy's Holiday with Max Cullen singing like guess who. RR played a Scottish piano player who wore a beret.

Dan: I quite liked Charlotte Grey too although I don't remember her shoes.

Re My Brilliant Career: I went to the Greater Union in Russell St to see it with some friends and we all cried when she turned him down. Not particularly feminist of us but there you go. When I see the clips nowadays I wonder why we got so upset what with the sugar bowl handle ears and the gormless look on his face. He's actually much better looking now.

I always hoped that Gillian Armstrong would make a film of the book's sequel, 'My Career goes Bung', still my favourite book title ever. So Australian.

Didn't High Tide have a very young Claudia Karvan in it as Judy Davis' daughter?

Great article in CANVAS John - but stop slagging off the suburbs (the Neighbours heartland)... did you not know that Gillian Armstrong grew up in Mitcham? OK, so she probably fled as soon as she could...
